Curiosity

The Little Boy

by Helen Buckley

Once a little boy went to school.

He was quite a little boy

And it was quite a big school.

But when the little boy

Found that he could go to his room

By walking right in from the door outside

He was happy;

And the school did not seem

Quite so big anymore.

One morning

When the little boy had been in school awhile,

The teacher said:

"Today we are going to make a picture."

"Good!" thought the little boy.

He liked to make all kinds;

Lions and tigers,

Chickens and cows,

Trains and boats;

And he took out his box of crayons

And began to draw.

But the teacher said,

"Wait!"

"It is not time to begin!"

And she waited until everyone looked ready.

"Now," said the teacher,

"We are going to make flowers."

"Good!" thought the little boy,

He liked to make beautiful ones

With his pink and orange and blue crayons.

But the teacher said

"Wait!"

"And I will show you how."

And it was red, with a green stem.

"There," said the teacher,

"Now you may begin.

"The little boy looked at his teacher's flower

Then he looked at his own flower.

He liked his flower better than the teacher's

But he did not say this.

He just turned his paper over,

And made a flower like the teacher's.

It was red, with a green stem.

On another day

When the little boy had opened

The door from the outside all by himself,

The teacher said:

"Today we are going to make something with clay."

"Good!" thought the little boy;

He liked clay.

He could make all kinds of things with clay:

Snakes and snowmen,

Elephants and mice,

Cars and trucks

And he began to pull and pinch

His ball of clay.

But the teacher said,

"Wait!"

"It is not time to begin!"

And she waited until everyone looked ready.

"Now," said the teacher,

"We are going to make a dish."

"Good!" thought the little boy,

He liked to make dishes.

And he began to make some

That were all shapes and sizes.

But the teacher said

"Wait!"

"And I will show you how.

"And she showed everyone how to make

One deep dish."There," said the teacher,

"Now you may begin."

The little boy looked at the teacher's dish;

Then he looked at his own.

He liked his better than the teacher's

But he did not say this.

He just rolled his clay into a big ball again

And made a dish like the teacher's.

It was a deep dish.

And pretty soon

The little boy learned to wait,

And to watch

And to make things just like the teacher.

And pretty soon

He didn't make things of his own anymore.

Then it happened

That the little boy and his family

Moved to another house,

In another city,

And the little boy

Had to go to another school.

This school was even bigger

Than the other one.

And there was no door from the outside

Into his room.

He had to go up some big steps

And walk down a long hall

To get to his room.

And the very first day

He was there,

The teacher said:

"Today we are going to make a picture."

"Good!" thought the little boy.

And he waited for the teacher

To tell what to do.

But the teacher didn't say anything.

She just walked around the room.

When she came to the little boyShe asked,

"Don't you want to make a picture?"

"Yes," said the lttle boy.

"What are we going to make?"

"I don't know until you make it," said the teacher.

"How shall I make it?" asked the little boy.

"Why, anyway you like," said the teacher.

"And any color?" asked the little boy.

"Any color," said the teacher.

"If everyone made the same picture,

And used the same colors,

How would I know who made what,

And which was which?"

"I don't know," said the little boy.

And he began to make a red flower with a green stem.

Mashups

I think I would use a mashup for mapping out our family and where we all are. Would be great to use for our reunion coming up next year. I didnt realize I had been using a mashup when I checked out the sex offender registry map. As for library use I am not sure just yet how it could be implimented but I am sure I will come up with something : )

YouTube ROCKS!

I LOVE YouTube and have for a long time.
I have been following a great series "Chad Vader Day Manager"
Here is the link to the first episode

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4wGR4-SeuJ0&feature=related

I laugh just thinking about it.
Just FYI I started this assignment 45 minutes ago and got off on rabbit trails like you wouldnt believe. There are some times I start with just a link someone sent me to a video and end up burning hours checking out others. I still havent put a video up on YouTube but maybe someday.

Have fun and be sure to check out Chad Vader Day Manager

Screencasts

Ok so I was reading about screencasts just not connecting with a practical use and then it hit me...InfoSoup tutorials!! We could have a screencast on how to set up your account, how to save searches, how to generate an email when your favorite author has a new book added to the system.

I think this would be very helpful especially with patrons that are not used to using the online catalog.

Have a great Easter!!
Here is something for you all

Podcasting

Well I recorded a podcast this afternoon. My 9 yr old daughter, Cecelia, sang her favorite song. I did have some trouble with the quality of the recording but I think that is more due to my cell phone then the podcast itself. That and Cecelia was a bit shy so she didnt sing as loud as she would normally.

So now I am going to try to add it to my blog...lets see if this works...

Cecelia wanted to sing her favorite song "Above All"

Ok so I have to admit I have not felt favorably towards MySpace and other social networks. I did like how the libraries that I checked out had used their "space" to promote programming and to put themselves out there. I just dont really see it being that great of an asset. The people that would go to a MySpace or FaceBook account to find information about our library could just as quickly go to our homepage and find the same information. I also had considered having a site for our teen group and parents voiced concern over their teens being on the site.

I dont know maybe I am missing something but the social networking sites are not high on my list of things to add to my day.

Sorry I couldnt be more positive about this assignment.

Tell me who loves you
and I will tell you who you are

Remember the Milk, Jott etc...

I LOVE Jott! I used it to text to my husband. Of course his concern was that our cell phone company would find a way to bill us extra for the message but it didnt so I plan on using this service often. How great not to have to try to type out a text message!!

Adding the task to the project play sandbox was easy enough to do but it looks as if my email signature messed with the way my task was displayed. I would have to remember to take it off when adding a task to a list. Overall though I was very pleased with the ease of use and I am sure that after some more playing with it I will find it to be even more useful.

Oh and the task I posted was: For one day end all your sentences with "Ta-Da!"
(don't forget to bow after you say it)

Now go out and complete this task! SmileyCentral.com

I bet the main reason the police keep people away from a plane crash is
they don't want anybody walking in and lying down in the crash stuff,
then, when somebody comes up, act like they just woke up and go, "What
was THAT?!"

I <3 Google Docs

This lesson came at the perfect time. I got a laptop for my birthday and needed to transfer all my files, favorites and contacts from our desktop so of course I instantly thought to copy and paste them all to Google Docs then opening them on my laptop and saving them to my documents.

Whoo hoo Google Docs! SmileyCentral.com

I also think it is nice for Val and I to be able to share childrens programming ideas, plans and schedules. We both can work at home or at the library and still have easy access to files.
